Fortress/Castle Tourist attractions – various Cultural centre

The castle ruins in Tecklenburg consist of various structural remnants of its history. The complex has two castle courtyards, a forecourt and a main castle. Parts of the moat and the rampart have been preserved. The castle was built around 1100 to control the Lübeck-Bremen-Münster-Cologne trade route. Until the 19th century, it changed hands several times and became less and less important for trade. Instead, increasing attention was paid to the preservation of monuments and the historical value of the magnificent complex. Since 1927, plays have been staged in the castle courtyard, and since 1949 the Tecklenburg has been the venue for the Tecklenburg open-air theatre.
