Haus Runde was first mentioned in a document in 1370. The farm complex is located only about 24 km northwest of the beautiful university town of Münster, just outside the small town of Billerbeck. The grounds may only be entered by prior appointment. However, you can get a good view from the moat. Today, the picturesque estate is used as an event and wedding location, among other things.

History information

Haus Runde presents itself as a historic moat with rural charm. The estate was first mentioned in a document in 1370 as one of the main farms of the Münster monastery of St. Mauritz. As it was farmed by the Bertling family, it also bore their name at that time. It was not until 1693 that the farm passed to the Runde family through marriage. It was given the name "Haus Runde" in 1744, when Joan Werner Olfers, who had married into the family, named the property after his wife.

It is striking that the dwelling house and granary were built of stone rather than timber-framed early on, although neither a schoolmaster nor a high-ranking clergyman of the abbey lived on the farm. The Renaissance-style granary probably dates from the 16th century. In the 19th century, other buildings were added, such as the former brewery and storehouse with its clock and bell mechanism, which was built in 1870 and later converted into a residential house. In 1890, the stone bridge was renewed and a publicly accessible landscape park was laid out outside the moat.

In 1937, the von Olfers family took over the management of Haus Runde, cultivates fruit on part of the land and contributes to the preservation of the estate by lovingly maintaining the garden. In addition, couples can celebrate a unique wedding at Haus Runde. The grounds are inhabited and can be visited by appointment. However, a good view can also be had across the moat.

Tour information
  • Haus Runde can only be visited on request. It is not permitted to enter the grounds without an appointment.
  • Outside visits are only possible outside the moat.
