Anholt moated castle

Wasserburg Anholt with its impressive castle park, princely art collections and the biotope wildlife park Anholter Schweiz is one of the most popular excursion destinations in NRW.

Wasserburg Anholt in Isselburg is one of the largest and best-known moated castles in North Rhine-Westphalia. Together with the impressive castle park, the princely art collections in the main castle as well as the biotope wildlife park Anholter Schweiz and a golf course, the ensemble is an extremely popular excursion destination in the Münsterland.

History information

In 1169, a Lord of Sulen "en Anholt" is mentioned for the first time as a feudal lord of the Utrecht Bishop Gottfried von Rhenen. When Wasserburg Anholt gained imperial immediacy in the early 13th century, the feudal relationship came to an end and the lords of Bronkhorst-Batenburg acquired the estate. Later the castle fell to the lords of Salm and Salm-Salm. The mighty tower has been a characteristic feature of the moated castle since the 12th century. It was built on oak piles, a lattice of wood and a stone foundation and extended in the 14th century and later as a baroque residence. Since 1647, Anholt Castle has been the residence of the Princes of Salm-Salm. It is one of the few castles in North Rhine-Westphalia that is still privately owned today. The princely art collections in the main castle can be visited on a guided tour, while the outer castle is home to the Romantik Park Hotel.
