History information

Haus Borg is a Münsterland moated castle par excellence. It consists of a three-island complex with outer castle, main castle and gardens. The baroque garden is complemented by a representative driveway with an avenue. The various construction phases from the 15th to the 18th century can be clearly seen in the buildings: The plain manor house, which seems to float in the water, dates in its beginnings from the 15th century. In the following century, extensions were built on the grounds. Considerable structural interventions followed in the 18th century under Oberhofmarschall Jobst Stephan Freiherr von Kerckernick, when the estate was to be expanded into a three-winged complex according to the plans of master builder Gottfried Laurenz Pictorius. The interior of the estate was also remodelled: The stucco work by Antonio Rizzi, who also left structural traces on Nordkirchen Castle in the Münsterland, is impressive. The planned extension of the manor house into a magnificent three-winged complex was never completed; only the eastern side wing was finished in 1719.

Haus Borg is now privately owned and is a family retreat. It cannot be visited and would rather be enjoyed at a distance. The maintenance and renovation of the house and the baroque gardens have been ongoing for several years.

House Borg is privately owned and cannot be visited from the inside. An outside visit is possible from the street.
