Fortress/Castle

The special feature of the moated castle Haus Bisping is the gatehouse dating from 1651: Ashlar, half-timbering, red brick, yellow sandstone and a crowning three-tiered gable weave the building idyllically into the Münsterland park landscape. Haus Bisping is now privately owned and cannot be visited, but can be admired at a distance

History information

Haus Bisping is a moated castle, only a few parts of which remain today. The gatehouse from 1651 is an architectural witness of the castle complex, smiling at visitors across the moat in almost typical Münsterland garb: ashlar, half-timbering, red brick, yellow sandstone and a crowning three-tiered gable weave the gatehouse idyllically into the Münsterland park landscape. The former gateway is still clearly recognisable today despite structural changes. On the oriel above it is the date 1681 together with two coats of arms - one of the Droste family and one of the von Galen family. The entire complex was first mentioned in 1364 and had been owned by the von Galen family since the 16th century. Prince-Bishop Christoph Bernhard von Galen, for whom the magnificent residential palace in Münster was built, saw the light of day here in 1606.

Haus Bisping is now privately owned and is a family retreat. It cannot be visited and would rather be enjoyed at a distance. A special feature is the nearby Haus Borg, to which Haus Bisping's gardens are also aligned.
