House Diek

Haus Dieck was built as a medieval moated castle with a square ground plan. Today, the manor house with the rentei, the gatehouse and a large garden at the back are still preserved. The complex is privately owned and cannot be visited.

History information

Haus Dieck is a little hidden away from the main road in Westkirchen. In 1276, the large estate was owned by Conrad de Dyke, who was also to give it its name. Today, the manor house with the rentei, the gatehouse and a large garden at the back are still preserved. As a medieval moated castle with a square ground plan, the castle was built in the middle of nine-metre-wide weirs. It served as a predecessor building on whose cellar base the present manor house was built in 1771. Johann Conrad Schlaun modelled it on a French building, so that it is still particularly impressive today with its three-sided central risalite and the flat mansard roof. A double flight of stairs leads to the entrance door, above which the family coat of arms of the builders can be found: the von der Recke and von Hanxleben families. The gatehouse was built of half-timbering in 1746 and extended by the hunting lodge in the north wing in 1760.

Today, Haus Dieck is privately owned and is a family retreat. It cannot be visited and would rather be enjoyed at a distance. However, there is a special feature to see in the Liesborn Abbey Museum: Here is the original statue of Maria Immaculata from 1771, a copy of which guards the entrance to the complex here at Haus Dieck.
