House Schücking

Fortress/Castle

From the street in the centre of Sassenberg, Haus Schücking appears fairytale-like, perhaps even a little bizarre. Haus Schücking, named after the prince-bishop chancellor Christoph Bernhard Engelbert Schücking, was built in 1754 by Johann Conrad Schlaun, probably the most important architect of the Westphalian Baroque.

The single-storey brick house is still inhabited by the Schücking family and can therefore only be admired from the street.

History information

The single-storey brick building, Haus Schücking, was built in 1754 by Johann Conrad Schlaun. It was intended to serve as a country residence for the prince-bishop chancellor Christoph Bernhard Engelbert Schücking, after whom the house was named.

The garden side of the historic building was particularly important to the owner, who wanted to relax and enjoy his time at his country estate. It is therefore not surprising that the façade facing the garden in particular was artistically designed. The view towards the street, on the other hand, is rather plain.

In 1882, a south wing was added to the building. It is reminiscent of a tower-like pyramid roof and gives the building a unique shape. The house is still privately owned and can only be admired from the street.
