Fortress/Castle

Built in 1740 in the Baroque style, Freckenhorst Castle served for a long time as the abbey building of the canoness convent founded in 851, which gained great influence in the Münster diocese. The interior of the castle, with its large fireplaces, mirrored halls and numerous paintings, is still in the style of the period in which it was built. Freckenhorst Castle is now privately owned, but tours of the castle and gardens are possible by arrangement.

Tour information

The castle and the adjacent gardens can only be visited by appointment.

History information

The origins of Freckenhorst Castle are a special contemporary witness to the former ladies' convent, which is located in the centre of Freckenhorst right next to the collegiate church of St. Boniface. The builder, Abbess Clara Franziska Countess von Westerholt, had the magnificent castle built in 1740 by the Paderborn court architect Franz Christoph von Nagel in the Baroque style. The building served as the abbey building of the canoness monastery founded in 851, which gained great influence and importance in the Münster diocese. The interior of the castle is still in the style of the time it was built: Large fireplaces, mirrored halls and paintings of the builder and special personalities of the time characterise the impression of the room. Since 1840, the baroque castle has been in the family possession of the Counts of Westerholt and Gysenberg, who live in and preserve the house. Through loving care of the garden and forestry, they maintain the romantic impression of the former monastery grounds in particular, along with many other tasks.

Today, Freckenhorst Castle is privately owned and is a family retreat. Tours of the castle and gardens are only possible by arrangement and as part of events. Since 2018, civil weddings can be held in the castle.
