Westmünsterland

In the south-west of Münsterland, bordered by the Lower Rhine and the Ruhr area, lies the Hohe Mark Nature Park. The Hohe Mark is a small, ice-age hilly area and gave the nature park its name. This wooded range of hills is one of the largest contiguous wooded areas north of the Ruhr area. The entire nature park covers an area of 1977.81 square kilometres.

The nature park consists of very different types of landscape and thus offers visitors great diversity. The Münsterland park landscape with its meadows and pastures as well as hedges and groves of trees is complemented by unique heath and moorland areas. In addition to the large areas of forest, the landscape is also dominated by water. Lakes, rivers, streams and floodplains significantly shape the nature park and provide a habitat for numerous animal species.

Information for riders
The eastern part of the nature park is difficult to access with horses on the Münsterland Riding Route. All the more beautiful and varied are the possibilities in the western part around Reken, Raesfeld and Haltern am See. Here an extensive network of bridle paths awaits riders, whether they are touring riders or day trippers. Especially the Haard in Haltern am See is a real paradise, a dense network of sandy paths, parking areas and rest stops leaves nothing to be desired.
