1288 was a decisive year in the history of Düsseldorf: The then small settlement on the Düssel was awarded city rights by Count Adolf V. after the Battle of Worringen. To commemorate this historic moment, the Stadterhebungsmonument (City founding monument) was unveiled at the Düsseldorf 700th anniversary.
The detailed bronze sculpture by the artist Bert Gerresheim from 1988 shows scenes from the Battle of Worringen, the seal of the city deed and the elevation of the parish church dedicated to Saint Lambertus to the canonical foundation. The monument is located in Düsseldorf's Altstadt (Old town), on the corner of Josef-Wimmer-and Müller-Schlösser-Gasse. For those who want to celebrate the city founding once again: There are several old established breweries nearby.
