The Hilgenberg Chapel is a Roman Catholic pilgrimage chapel in Stadtlohn and is believed to have been built in the Late Bronze Age (1300 to 800 BC). The first written mention dates back to 1525. In 1695, the chapel was rebuilt under Prince Bishop Christian von Plettenberg. Since then, a procession has taken place every year on 2 July, the Visitation of the Virgin Mary. The crowds for this pilgrimage increased with rumours of miraculous cures and cattle plagues. A theft of the image of the Madonna in 1886 brought this rush to an abrupt end. In 1954, the people of Stadtlohn received a newly lent pilgrimage image of the Madonna of Raesfeld from Bishop Michael Keller.
Tour information

  • A visit to the exterior of the chapel is possible at any time.
  • A tour of the interior is also possible during the stated opening hours.
