The Honnef merchant Otto Hölterhoff bequeathed his entire fortune to the University of Bonn on the condition that a "home for ladies of the higher classes" and a "domestic science school for girls from the people" be established in memory of his wife.

The two building complexes, built between 1904 and 1906 in the neo-Renaissance style by the architects Gustav Jänicke, Ottomar Stein and Josef Happ, housed a ladies' convent and a domestic school until 1976. Since 1976, it has housed the offices of the German Physical Society (DPG), which was founded in 1845 and operates the "Physics Centre" here as a scientific conference and meeting place.
