The moated castle of Haus Vögeding lies idyllically at the gates of Münster. The mighty castle complex from the 14th century is rather unknown, but a real insider tip. Haus Vögeding lies on the 100 Castles Route between Hülshoff Castle and Haus Rüschhaus. Like the famous neighbouring houses, Haus Vögeding is also associated with the poet Anette von Droste-Hülshoff.

Tour information

It is not possible to visit the interior. The Vögeding house is privately owned.
A tour of the exterior is only possible from the street. There are beautiful views over the moat to the castle grounds.

History information

A castle at the present location of Haus Vögeding was first mentioned in a document in 1353 when the house was donated to the Cappenberg monastery. The feudatories were the Münster hereditary family of Bischopink.

The present Vögeding House was built in the 16th century as a closed quadrangular courtyard complex. The elongated farmhouse and a round tower still exist today. From 1827 to 1939 it was owned by Baron Droste zu Hülshoff, which confirms Annette von Droste-Hülshoff's relationship to Haus Vögeding. Afterwards, the estate passed to the tenant family.

Even the famous German writer Annette von Droste-Hülshoff could not resist the charm of this fairytale castle complex and made frequent stops at Haus Vögeding on her way between Haus Rüschhaus and Hülshoff Castle. Haus Vögeding is located on the outskirts of Münster in the north-west of the city, near Nienberge.
Arrival by car:
The A1 motorway and the B54 trunk road are close by. Access is via the Autobahn-Kreuz-Nord and the B54, exit Nienberge. Follow the signs to Haus Rüschhaus.
Arrival by bus and train:
To get there by bus, take bus line 5 from Münster main station in the direction of Münster Hannaschweg to the Haus Rüschhaus stop.
Haus Vögeding is about one kilometre from Haus Rüschhaus and can be reached on foot.
Münster main station is about 9 kilometres from Haus Vögeding.
