Church

The collegiate church plays an important role in the history of this idyllic village. The former monastery and later the ladies' convent had a fundamental influence on Metelen. Even today, the collegiate church is the centre of the village.

The oldest parts of the Catholic parish church of St. Cornelius and Cyprian date from the 12th century. Since the late 1980s, the collegiate church has housed a collegiate chamber with the treasures of the parish of Metelen. The collegiate chamber can be visited.

History information

The collegiate church in Metelen has its origins in the Metelen monastery. It was founded in 889 and initially used as a nunnery. In the 13th century it was then a canoness monastery, some of whose residents lived according to the Augustinian rules. At the end of the 15th century it was converted into a nunnery.

The western part of the collegiate church, which is still preserved today, was built in the 12th century. In the 13th century, the hall longhouse of the church was built. In the centuries that followed, the church building was extended and rebuilt several times. Most recently, the floor of the church was lowered in the 1930s and extensive restoration work was carried out between 1957 and 1961. The collegiate church has had a significant influence on the history of the small town of Metelen. Since 1989, the church has also housed a collegiate chamber with the treasures of the parish of Metelen.Probably the most valuable relic is a pocket reliquary in the shape of a bursa from the beginning of the 11th century.
