Church

With its completion in 1954, St. George's Church in Vreden is a comparatively young church building. However, it looks back on a past steeped in history. Archaeological excavations at the site of the present church confirmed six predecessor churches. The oldest foundation probably dates back to 820. Next to St. George's Church is the St. Filizitas Collegiate Church.

History information

The present parish church of St. George was built in 1954. This is certainly not one of the oldest church buildings. But the church of St. George stands on an important, historically significant foundation. When the previous church was destroyed in a bombing raid during the Second World War,archaeological excavationswerecarried outbetween 1949and 1951 in order to more accurately interpret the historical background of the site.

During the excavation and in a follow-up excavation from 2001 to 2003, traces of six predecessor churches were found. The oldest foundation dates back to 820.

The neighbouring ladies' monastery was also built in the ninth century. This suggests that there have always been two churches on this site. One for the abbey ladies and one for the population.

In the crypt of St. George's Church, the results of the archaeological excavations can be seen on an area of about 250 square metres.the results of the archaeological excavations can be viewed.
