Church

According to tradition, the collegiate church was built as early as the 9th century by a Saxon Count Walbert. The high noble ladies' convent existed in Vreden until 1810 and made a significant contribution to the history of the town. The two churches, the collegiate church and the parish church, probably stand directly next to each other. One church for the collegiate ladies and another for the population.

History information

According to tradition, the collegiate church was founded in the ninth century by the Saxon Count Walbert. The construction of the collegiate church and the founding of the Damenstift are thus closely linked to the history of the town. It is assumed that after the construction of the monastery a settlement arose which then developed over the centuries into the present-day town of Vreden. The Damenstift in Vreden existed until 1810.

On 21 March 1945, the collegiate church of St. Felizitas and the neighbouring parish church of St. George were badly damaged. The collegiate church was then rebuilt from 1947 to 1952. In the process, the baroque furnishings and the paintings of the collegiate church were lost. The reconstruction was based on a historical form, an early Romanesque church with Gothic elements.

During the reconstruction of the collegiate church, excavations were carried out at St. George's Church, as it had been almost completely destroyed. The excavations revealed that a church had also existed on the site of the parish church since the ninth century. This suggests that both churches have always coexisted at the site. One for the abbey ladies and one for the population.
