Monument

Germany's only monument to the Duke of Saxony

The only Wittekind monument in Germany commemorates Charlemagne's great adversary. The Saxon Duke Wittekind (also known as Widukind) put up fierce resistance against the superior Franks and their Christian faith. The monument commemorates the miracle of the spring, Wittekind's conversion to Christianity. The original by Heinrich Wefing was melted down in 1942. The sculptor Walter Kruse redesigned it in 1959 based on the old model.
