Kunstquartier Hagen - Walk through a whole district for art

If you feel like walking from one place to several museums and looking at art from different epochs in a roundabout way, then you should definitely pay a visit to the Kunstquartier Hagen Hagen. And in case you didn't know it yet: In Hagen, you are in a place where a decisive chapter in German art history was written. The Museum Quarter, founded in 2009, is an exhibition and event venue that takes this history into account.

Discover countless paintings, sculptures and sculptures in the Osthaus Museum

If you are not one of the great art connoisseurs, you are also in the right place in the Osthaus Museum: The museum attaches great importance to making the meaning of art understandable not only to the experts, but to everyone. Here, the focus is on the visitors. Art from classical modernism to contemporary positions becomes an experience in numerous special exhibitions. You can marvel at more than 1,000 works of painting, almost 800 sculptures and approximately 250 art objects. For children, young people and the young at heart, the "Junge Museum" - part of the Osthaus Museum - offers art on current topics and everyday events. You will therefore mainly find contemporary and modern art there.

Thanks to Karl Ernst Osthaus - the history of the Folkwang begins in Hagen

As a branch of the Osthaus Museum, the  "Museum des Hagener Impulses" in the Hohenhof in Hagen provides an overview of the history of the Folkwang Museum founder Karl Ernst Osthaus. With him, one of Germany's most important art patrons and collectors comes from the Metropole Ruhr. Thanks to his passion for art, we can now proudly claim that one of the most important art collections of modern art was founded in Hagen and remains in the Ruhr region to this day. During his lifetime, Osthaus was friends with the Belgian artist and designer Henry van de Velde. The latter turned the Osthaus family villa into a total work of art in Art Nouveau style: furniture, curtains, wall decorations, cutlery and crockery - everything is subject to the overall concept and was designed and made especially for the villa. So if you are interested in a wild mix of architecture, art and history, this is an incomparable property.

For modern and contemporary art, visit the Emil Schumacher Museum

The interactions between the exhibitions in the Museum Ostwall and the Emil Schumacher Museum make your visit to the Museumsquartier a unique art experience. The latter is one of the most important museums of modern and contemporary art in the Ruhr region and an absolute highlight for the art fans among you! It is dedicated to the pioneering role of its namesake, who was one of the most important painters of the late 20th century, and is considered the centre of research into expressive painting after 1945. The exhibition programme of the Emil Schumacher Museum presents him and his works in the context of parallel international developments in art and his contemporary environment. So if you want to learn more about the life and work of the Hagen artist and his influence on other artists, don't miss a visit to the Emil Schumacher Museum!
