City Hall/Citizens’ services historical building Historic site

The excellently renovated old town hall of the copper town of Stolberg is nowadays connected to the New Town Hall and houses the representative Great Council Hall and the registry office.

Originally, the neoclassical central building of the old town hall was adjoined to the north by the town hall school and to the south by an extended side wing. The charisma and charm of the old town hall architecture only came into its own after the aforementioned extensions had been removed to make room for the new eleven-storey town hall building. The reconstruction of the old town hall in combination with a careful restoration of the reduced building structure in accordance with the preservation of historical monuments resulted in a symmetrically structured, representative solitary building that reflects the neoclassical style of the early 19th century almost better than the original. The positive appearance of the restored old building convinced many sceptics and may also have played a role in the decision to renovate the old town of Stolberg in order to preserve the existing buildings. During Advent, the design of the windows turns the historic building into the largest Advent calendar in the region.
