The castle, which dates from the 15th century, is now used as a museum & event location.
Please note that the castle can currently only be visited from the outside due to ongoing construction work. The gastronomy in the castle is temporarily closed due to a change of tenants.
The medieval castle is the prominent landmark of the town of Stolberg. It is located with its buildings, towers, enclosing walls, and fortifications on a powerful limestone rock above the Vichtbach Valley. The strong walls are so artfully anchored in the rock that the entire castle complex seems to have grown out of a single stone.
If the castle is being used for a wedding or another event, it will NOT be available for free visits that day. Please inquire before your castle visit with Stolberg-Touristik at 02402 99900-80 or directly with the castle at 02402 1020026 to see if a visit is possible on your desired date.
The castle complex, dating back to the 12th century, is primarily used today as an event and meeting place. On the upper floor, there is the castle gallery, a spacious room where art exhibitions take place regularly. The middle floor, with its knights' hall and living quarters, serves as a venue for concerts, celebrations, and weddings. Throughout its long history, the castle has been destroyed and rebuilt multiple times. Due to the excessive use of historical style elements during the reconstruction around 1900 of the heavily decayed castle, the character of the complex was greatly altered. After another partial destruction during World War II, the castle was rebuilt in the 1950s to resemble how it looked at the beginning of the 18th century, so our Stolberg landmark now shines again in historically largely correct form.
On the western side of the courtyard, a staircase leads down from the main building between the main structure and the foreland round tower to the lower courtyard. Here, the modern industrial backdrop of the former Hammerfeld emerges, where a commercial and later industrial site developed from its beginnings in the 15th century.
The lower courtyard offers a view of the impressive blue stone formation of the castle rock with the castle perched on top. On the other side is the slightly lower and also accessible castle herb garden.
To the east, the formidable gate tower with its picturesque inner courtyard follows. This building complex emerged shortly after 1900 as part of a castle renovation. Despite its late creation, this part ensemble does not appear as a foreign body but contributes to the romantic flair of the entire complex. In the gate tower, there is a local history museum.
The highest publicly accessible room is the castle gallery, where the so-called ARTIBUS exhibitions take place.
