The distinctive rock formation made of sandstone natural rock originates from a massive river deposition that covered the entire Eifel region around 220 million years ago. Over the course of millions of years, uplift and subsidence processes of the Earth's crust, as well as rain, wind, and frost, have contributed to its current appearance. The overhanging rock faces that formed provided natural protection against adverse weather conditions.
