On the heights of the Stotzheim Forest lies the ruin of the water castle complex Hardtburg. Even today, the remnants of the keep, the outer bailey, and the curtain walls testify to a defensible medieval fortress, as its character has not been altered by renovations.
On the heights of the Stotzheim Forest lies the ruins of the water castle complex Hardtburg. Even today, the remnants of the keep, the outer bailey, and the curtain walls testify to a formidable medieval fortress, as its character has not been altered by renovations.
In 1166, the Hardtburg was mentioned in documents for the first time. While the main castle was already in ruins in the 18th century, the outer bailey remained well preserved. The former main castle with its tower can be climbed during the winter months, as it serves as a home for nesting birds in spring and summer.
In the idyllic location of the Hardt Forest, surrounded by castle ponds, the Hardtburg was already a tourist attraction in the last century. Today, the nature reserve around the castle is developed as a recreational area with hiking parking lots, shelters, as well as riding and circular hiking trails. The Römerkanal hiking trail runs directly along the Hardtburg.
