Haus Visbeck in Dülmen is a former manor dating back to the 14th century, which is no longer preserved in its former form. Even today, there is something mystical about the complex, which is certainly due to its long and eventful history. Only the outer castle and the Lady Chapel, built in the 18th century by Johann Conrad von Schlaun, have survived.

Today, Haus Visbeck is privately owned. Various events such as the Christmas market "Visbecker Lichter" or the medieval market with falconers, musicians and jousting regularly attract numerous visitors to the former manor.

History information

Haus Visbeck in Dülmen is a former manor dating back to the 14th century - which, however, is no longer preserved in its former form. Even today, there is something mystical about the complex, which is certainly due to its long, eventful history.

First mentioned in a document in 1338, the spacious building complex, which was built as a fortified structure on two islands, originally belonged to the Lords of Visbeck. Later, the buildings found other owners, most recently the well-known Westphalian noble family Droste zu Vischering. The manor house burnt down completely in the 17th century and was not rebuilt. As a result, only part of the outer castle and the Lady Chapel remain today. In its original form, the Marienkapelle Visbeck was an octagonal wooden chapel that was first mentioned in a document in 1572.

Today's brick chapel was very probably built according to the plans of the famous Baroque master builder Johann Conrad Schlaun. Construction began in 1747 and ended in 1749, as attested by the weather vane of the bell roof rider. As early as 29 May 1747, the chapel received the measuring privilege from Pope Benedict XIV.

Today, Haus Visbeck is privately owned. However, various events regularly attract the public, such as the small but fine Christmas market "Visbecker Lichter" or a medieval market where falconers, musicians, storytellers and traders perform - knight fights included. Schlaun's Lady Chapel is also used for concerts, church services, readings and exhibitions.
