History information

In the midst of the idyllic Münsterland park landscape in the tranquil town of Wadersloh-Diestedde lies a dream castle without equal: Crassenstein Castle. The castle complex with its magnificent park is the landmark of the small town - and tells of an eventful past.

Crassenstein Castle, built by the Burgrave of Stromberg, was first mentioned in a document in 1177. Over the following centuries, it has repeatedly changed owners and been rebuilt several times. In 1951, the St. Marien boarding school was established in the castle, followed by a boarding school for boys, later a research institution and finally, until today, an international public school.

Today, Crassenstein Castle is a public school and therefore cannot be visited. A walk around the castle's moats is nevertheless worthwhile: the mill stream with its historic mill, the clattering water wheel and the quacking ducks and swans in the moat make Crassenstein a truly fairytale place.
