Café Profittlich

(Arts and) Crafts

Built in 1731 and located directly on Ziepchensplatz, the building has been owned by master baker Stephan Profittlich and his descendants since 1892. In 1924 and 1926, the bakery was extended to include a patisserie, café and wine bar.

The model of a cable railway from Rhöndorf to the Siebengebirge, which was planned by Peter Profittlich Sr. in the 1950s but failed due to Adenauer's opposition, is on display in the guest rooms on the first floor, which have been preserved in their original condition from 1926. Since 1987, a cornmeal bread has been baked here, the recipe for which was patented by Adenauer in 1915 (he was First Alderman of his home town of Cologne at the time) together with the Oebel brothers from Cologne. The gentleman's cake from Profittlich's bakery is said to have been Adenauer's favourite cake, and the Christmas stollen was sent all over the world.
