historical building Fortress/Castle

The gatehouse of Haus Holtwick was built in 1670 as a two-storey house. In its original form, the east gable represents typical West Münsterland half-timbering. In the past, the gatehouse was the entrance to a courtyard surrounded by a moat and could only be entered via a drawbridge. Today, the lovingly restored gatehouse serves as a meeting place and is part of the Holtwick Generations Park.
History information

The gatehouse of Haus Holtwick was built in 1670 as a two-storey house and is a construction that will delight every architecture lover: The east gable is particularly striking, which in its originality stands for typical West Münsterland half-timbered art.

Originally, the façade was mud-bricked, which can still be seen in protected wall areas under the roof overhangs. Possibly the builders were ashamed of the hand-formed bricks. On the other hand, the pigeon openings in the east gable refer to a certain social status of the owners - because not everyone had the right to keep pigeons at that time.

Originally, the gatehouse formed the entrance to a courtyard that was surrounded by a moat and could only be entered via a drawbridge. In the west, the courtyard consisted of a Baroque garden, in the east of the main house and several farm buildings. The moats not only surrounded the castle-like complex, but also extended into parts of the village.

Today, the lovingly restored gatehouse serves as a meeting place. It is part of the Holtwick Generations Park, which includes a spacious playground, various fitness equipment, a beach volleyball court, a water treading pool and the bakery of the local history society.
