House Döring

Haus Döringweg 5, 46325 Borken
historical building Fortress/Castle

Haus Döring is an "old castle moth" and represents the original form of all Münsterland moated castles. It was most likely built in the 12th century. The circular hill on which Haus Döring was built was surrounded by a double moat. Because of its high position, the residential tower on this approx. 8 m high hill offered the best conditions for successful defence. Today, a simple, two-storey Baroque building from 1727 stands on the earth cone, but the remains of the medieval castle can still be found in its cellars. The Döring house cannot be visited. It can only be viewed from the outside at a distance.

Tour information
  • Haus Döring is privately owned. It is therefore not possible to visit the interior.
  • An outside visit is possible from the wayside.
History information

Haus Döring is an old manor house on the territory of the former municipality of Marbeck. It was probably built in the 12th century on an artificial hill surrounded by a double moat. Because of its elevated position, the stone residential tower offered ideal conditions for defence against enemies. The farm buildings were located on the outer bailey and thus protected the main access to the small hilltop castle.

The von Döring family is mentioned as early as the Middle Ages. In 1265, a Johann von Döring was the bishop's bailiff at Bocholt and Borken. In 1303 Johan de Döring is mentioned as a knight. Today it is assumed that this family could be a branch of the von Lembeck family. Between 1545 and 1777, the estate was owned by the Lords of Wylich and von Leerodt. In 1727, they had a new Baroque building erected on the mound, which served as a residential house and still exists today. The house includes a listed water mill, which probably dates from the 17th/18th century. The masonry of the rectangular block building is made of brick with sandstone details. The undershot water wheel and the weir are also still preserved. The property has been privately owned since 1922. The house is therefore readily perceived with some distance.
