historical building Fortress/Castle

The Haus von Hülst was built in 1677 as an administrative building for the noble ladies' convent of Asbeck. The single-storey brick building was erected on the vaulted cellar of a predecessor building from the 14th century. The estate received its present name at the beginning of the 19th century when it became the property of the von Hülst family.

The von Hülst house is located in the beautiful historic centre of the village near the St. Brigida church in Legden. It is privately owned and can only be visited from the outside.

History information

The property, which was originally used for the administration of the noble ladies' convent in Asbeck, is said to have been known in former times as the 'Vogtshaus'. The property got its present name at the beginning of the 19th century, when it came into the possession of the 'von Hülst' family and remained there for almost 150 years.

It was built in 1677 for the patrician Johannes Röttger Menke, who was also the bailiff of the Prince Bishop of Münster. The year of construction can still be read from the wall anchors on the gable.

The single-storey town house was built of brick over the vaulted cellar of a predecessor building from the 14th century. It is in the Baroque style and stands on a sandstone plinth. The cornices, the window frames and the corner ashlar are also made of sandstone. The staircase gable is a special ornament. It was decorated with volutes and ball attachments. The crowning glory is a finely crafted attachment with a dovecote at the very top. In the garden there is another two-storey outbuilding, which is a half-timbered house from the second half of the 18th century.

Later, the house went to the Busch family, from whom the adjacent street Busshook also takes its name.

At the beginning of the 20th century, the property also served the Amtmann von Hülst as the official residence for the municipality of Legden. The building, which was barely habitable at the end of its life, was thoroughly renovated in 1988/89 and energy-saving measures were carried out again in 2011/12. In the process, the old materials were preserved, such as the roof truss, which was no longer statically verifiable, but is now under the new roof truss. Today, the property is used as a private living space and can therefore only be visited from the outside.

Tour information
