Longinus Tower

The Longinusturm in Nottuln is probably the highest point in Münsterland.

Probably the highest point in the otherwise rather flat Münsterland! On the Westerberg (186.2 metres above sea level), in the middle of the Münsterland Baumberge, stands the 32-metre-high Longinus Tower. It is the region's landmark and a popular destination for excursions. No matter what time of year, the view from the visitor platform over the region is unique. There is a café in the tower itself. The tower offers a beautiful view and a good opportunity to relax with a coffee break. Whether after a hike or a cycling tour through the beautiful Baumberge mountains.

Tour information
  • A tour of the tower is only possible during the café's opening hours.
  • Visits outside opening hours are only possible on request.
  • An outside tour can take place at any time.
History information

The landmark of the Baumberge, the Longinusturm, was built between 1897 and 1901 by the Baumberge Association. It was named after the initiator of the construction, the first chairman, Dr Fritz Westhoff. Until today, the Longinus Tower has had many functions, whether as an aerial observation point in the First World War, for military radio traffic in the Second World War or subsequently as a telecommunications centre for the German Federal Post Office. The massive building has been a listed building since 1901. However, it became famous above all for pioneering the first television reception in West Germany in the 1950s. Since 1995, the tower has mainly been used as a café. The nearby WDR station has been responsible for television broadcasting since 1959.
