historical building Fortress/Castle

Between Dülmen and Coesfeld lies the former manor of Haus Schwickering, which was first mentioned in a document in 1359. It is no longer possible to trace the exact date of the estate's existence. The two-winged manor house that still exists today dates from 1811. The round tower that connects the two wing buildings is striking.

History information

Haus Schwickering emerged from a medieval manor. It is no longer possible to trace exactly how long the estate has existed. The first documented mention dates back to 1359, when the Wiedenbrück-Schorlemer family was named as the owners. A preserved alliance coat of arms on the manor house suggests that they once built it.

The complex includes a two-winged, harmoniously designed manor house, whose two simple wing buildings stand at right angles to each other. They each have a crippled hipped roof and are connected by a round tower. The brick building dates from 1811, the plastered extension from 1830.

Between 1816 and 1853, Josef von Wiedenbrück, the first bailiff of the administrative district of Rorup-Lette, had his home here. In the early 1920s, the architect Emil Fahrenkamp had the house, which had fallen into disrepair in the meantime, converted into a summer residence for an industrialist. In the 1960s, a children's home was established, which was also used for some time as a convalescent home for nuns.

The listed Schwickering House is privately owned and can only be admired from the outside with a little distance. Since 1973, a Berlin architectural office has had one of its offices in the house.
