History information

It is a classic moated castle and a typical Münsterländer: Haus Havixbeck. The magnificent, three-winged complex, which is often mistakenly called a moated castle, is now a listed building and, like many other castles in the Münsterland, is still privately inhabited.

The castle once belonged to the monastery of St. Mauritz. In 1369, the provost of the monastery granted the estate to the knight Dietrich von Schonebeck. Through marriage, the estate came into the possession of the von Bevern family, who began building the present manor house in the 16th century. A corbel on the Renaissance building still bears the date of construction 1562. At the beginning of the 17th century, the house was transferred as a dowry to the von Twickel family.

Extensions to the manor house, gate tower and manor house building were added in the following years. The estate also underwent numerous conversions and extensions in the 19th century, when especially the outer castle island with its farm buildings was extended.

Even today, the magnificent complex presents itself in the glittering glow of its wide moat. The von Twickel family still lives in and manages the estate, which is why it is not open to the public. The grounds can be visited as part of a guided tour by the local tourist association.
