The Schlüsselburg barn quarter
The still existing barn quarter in the Petershagen district of Schlüsselburg is a rural cultural asset of supra-regional importance. The oldest of the 26 barns that still exist today date back to around 1600-1700. The "Humbke", the highest elevation in the area, was chosen as the location. In addition to numerous floods caused by various high waters of the Weser in historical times, the village was also destroyed by a striking number of fires. The barn quarter is mainly privately owned. A barn renovated in 2012 now serves as an information barn and provides information about the barn quarter and the work of the "Dat Schünenviertel" association.
Barn quarters are special gems of rural building culture. For fear of devastating fires, most of the barns were built outside villages between 1700 and 1800 and provided space for storage and shelter. Today, the individual barn quarters offer space for a wide variety of uses.
