Together with the adjoining park, the city palace is one of the defining historical sites in the heart of Coesfeld's city centre. In the immediate vicinity is the market square with St Lambert's Church and the town hall. The city palace itself is now also part of the city administration.

History information

The so-called city castle, together with the adjoining park, is one of the most characteristic historical buildings in the core of Coesfeld's city centre. Among the population it is not only called the "city castle", but also the "Liebfrauenburg". There are good reasons for this:

The history of the town castle is very eventful. It was built between 1664 and 1666 as a Jesuit college under the then Prince-Bishop Christoph Bernhard von Galen.

In 1803 it passed to the Salm-Grumbach family, who took on the title Salm-Horstmar after 1806. They used the building as a castle for a short time before the former Varlar monastery became the family's residence.

During the Second World War, large parts of Coesfeld's town centre were badly damaged. The town castle was also a victim of the bombs. After reconstruction, during which the gateway and Bernhard-von-Galen-Straße were also built, the order "Sisters of Our Lady" used the building as a convent. The name "Liebfrauenburg" dates from this time.

In 1978, the sisters moved into their new convent "Annenthal" on Gerlever Weg, and the city of Coesfeld acquired the building. From 2010 onwards, extensive renovation and functional optimisation took place. Today, the so-called city castle is the city's administrative building.

Information for cyclists
Coesfeld is ideal for cyclists simply because of its location. The district town lies to the west of Münster and is bordered to the north by the hilly landscape of the Baumberge mountains. In the west, a flat plain awaits cyclists that extends into the nearby Netherlands. Coesfeld therefore has the right cycle routes for all requirements.
In addition, several themed routes run through Coesfeld, offering perfect opportunities for multi-day cycling tours through the Münsterland region:
100 Castles Route, West Course
Sandstone Route
The entrance to the Münsterland cycle route network, which is around 4500 kilometres long, is directly at the town castle. Here everyone can find their next cycle route.
