Clemens Church

Baroque architecture on the outside and beautiful rococo style elements on the inside.

The Clemens Church was built from 1745 to 1753 for the Merciful Brothers as a monastery and hospital church. The plans for the church were drawn up by none other than the Baroque master Johann Conrad Schlaun, who also worked on the nearby Erbdrostenhof and many other buildings in Münsterland. The Clemens Church is one of the most important church buildings in northern Germany, but its interior inspires with enchanting rococo style elements. The adjacent monastery was dissolved in the 18th century. Today, the Clemens Church is mainly used for church services, concerts and weddings. A look inside the church is always worthwhile.

• The outside area and the small park are freely accessible at all times.
• The inside of the church can only be visited on request or during an event.
• On some days, the vestibule of the Clemes Church is accessible. Through a lattice door there are wonderful views of the beautiful ceiling paintings and the imposing columns at the main altar.

The Clemens Church was built from 1745 to 1753 on the basis of plans by the Baroque architect Johann Conrad Schlaun, commissioned by Prince-Bishop Clemens August of Bavaria. The Clemens Church belonged to the monastery and hospital of the Brothers of Mercy, which was dissolved in 1811.

During the Second World War, the Clemens Church was largely destroyed in an air raid on Münster. Only parts of the façade were preserved. Today, a faithful copy of the original Clemens Church stands on the same site. Reconstruction began as early as 1956. The elaborate interior decoration with beautiful ceiling paintings and imposing columns was completed in 1973.

Today, the church belongs to the parish community of the city centre and is mainly used for church services, concerts and weddings.
