The Maar-cross above the Schalkenmehren Maar is worth the climb. The view at 535 metres above sea level over the region is incredible and at the same time very decelerating.
Above the Schalkenmehrener Maar, a summit cross stands at 534.5 meters above sea level. This cross has a history like everything else and is no longer in its original place.
Nevertheless, its inscription "Maarkreuz seist du genannt, uns zum Heil und diesem Land. Notjahr 1932" reminds us of severe thunderstorms and the damage and crop failures they caused. Many families had to endure great hardship. It was meant to serve as a protective cross for the future, even after its relocation to the current spot.
