Especially for young visitors to GesundLand, the enchanted Elf Cave near Bad Bertrich is a popular destination, as fabulous fairy tales come alive here in the mind's eye. Immerse yourself for a moment in legendary stories and ancient legends when you visit the small cave. The cave is located right next to the namesake “HeimatSpur Walking Trail Elf Cave,” which, at 2.4 km, is manageable even for children. Next to it, the Elbesbach Waterfall crashes down with a roar. This place owes its nickname “Cheese Cave” to the shape of its stones, which resemble round cheese wheels. The cave was formed many thousands of years ago when molten basalt lava flowed from the high volcanoes into the Üssbach Valley, creating a unique landscape there. As it cooled, the basalt lava solidified into columns, developing horizontal tension cracks. Through weathering over the centuries, the shape resembling stacked cheese wheels emerged, giving the Elf Cave its distinctive appearance. (registered natural monument)
