National Geopark Laacher See
Geological heritage of the Eastern Eifel
The largest lake in Rhineland-Palatinate, the Laacher See, is at the center of the newly restructured National Geopark Laacher See established in 2016. The Geopark Laacher See extends from Andernach on the Rhine through the Brohltal near Niederzissen, north of Laacher See. To the east, the area reaches into the Eifel near Boos and includes the entire Vulkanpark from Mayen through Mendig to Kaltenengers.
Sights within the Geopark
In addition to 17 volcanological and cultural historical landscape monuments, the Geopark Laacher See includes the Vulkanpark Visitor Center in Plaidt, the Roman Mine Meurin in Kretz, the Geysir Center in Andernach, the Lava Dome in Mendig, the Erlebniszentrum Grubenfeld in Mayen, and the German Pumice Museum in Kaltenengers. The volcanic region of Laacher See and the Vulkanpark in the district of Mayen-Koblenz aim to make the geological heritage of the area around Laacher See accessible to visitors and highlight the diversity of this young landscape.
