Hagen is the city that has the world's first walkable and comprehensible planetary model. Large bronze plates marking the course of the planets are located at many prominent places on the pavements in the city centre and outside. The point of reference is the large solar sphere on the town hall tower.
Walter K. B. Holz published the first ideas for building a true-to-scale image of our solar system as early as 1959. From 1970 onwards, his ideas were turned into reality. One metre in the model is one million kilometres in nature. In addition to the true-to-scale images of the planets, the bronze plates also contain their most important data

The first stop is the Sonnenkugel in the Ratskeller. It is located in a separate room and can be visited on request from the landlord of the restaurant (for more information see page 4 of this brochure). After the sun, the bronze plates of the planets Mercury and Venus, located on Friedrich-Ebert-Platz, are a good choice (for more information, see page 5). From Venus, go to the plates of the planets Earth and Mars in front of the Sparkasse building (more information on page 6). After crossing Körnerstraße, you reach the north-west corner of the Volkspark, where the plate for the minor planets is located. Within sight is the Astro-Zentrum, where our little tour ends. A small extension of the route results if you follow the adjoining Bahnhofsstraße on the right side out of town.
