Park/gardens

The Stadtgarten to the south of Essen's main railway station is not only Essen's oldest publicly accessible green space, but also the largest green space in the inner city area, covering almost 7 hectares.

The park dates back to a private initiative by Essen citizens in 1864. With its many green spaces and sunbathing areas, a central pond complete with fountain and large play areas for young and old, it is a popular attraction, especially in summer. The park is culturally charged not only by its direct proximity to the Philharmonie and the Aalto Theatre, but also by the sculptures and other works of art by Thomas Schütte, Ulrich Rückriem and Wilhelm Nida-Rümelin, among others.
