Industrial heritage

Even when it was still in operation, the coal washing plant at the Zollverein colliery was the largest building in the entire colliery, measuring 90 metres long, 30 metres wide and 45 metres high. This is where the raw coal was separated from the extracted rock and classified. After the colliery was closed down, the striking building was rebuilt by the architects Rem Koolhaas and Heinrich Böll in accordance with the preservation order. Today, visitors reach the 24-metre level, where the Zollverein International Visitor Centre and a café are located, via an orange illuminated escalator. While the levels above are part of the Zollverein Monument Trail due to the large stock of preserved machinery and the Industrial Culture Portal is located on the 30-metre level, the floors below the visitor centre are reserved for the exhibition rooms and depots of the Ruhr Museum. With around 6,000 exhibits, the regional museum tells the fascinating and eventful story of the Ruhr region. In addition, there are regularly exciting special exhibitions.
