The preserved factory buildings of the Elbers textile factory reflect a broad spectrum of typical architecture from the period between 1850 and 1960. Since 2003, the majority of the factory and administration buildings have been listed. Today, the historic brick buildings are home to high-quality restaurants and a wide range of leisure and cultural facilities. Service providers, businesses and creative people have also settled here. In the summer months, the most beautiful and cosy beer garden in the heart of the city of Hagen is created on the premises.
One of the architectural highlights is the machine house of the former weaving mill and spinning mill, which was built between 1862 and 1864 in neo-Gothic style. Since 2011, the "Theater an der Volme" has been staged here. The chimney of the boiler house, built in 1861, is one of the oldest in Westphalia and, at 85 metres high, was long considered one of the tallest chimneys in Europe.
The latest projects are the total conversion of the former Firebird into the New Dye Works and the transformation of the former caretaker's hall into a highly attractive technology centre. Here, from August 2021, pupils will be prepared for their future careers in industry and the trades.
