Burg flair and half-timbered idyll from times gone by

Blankenheim has made a name for itself as the source of the Ahr. This beautiful castle town has much more to offer as well. What exactly, you'll find out best by visiting Blankenheim yourself.

Historic center with an imposing castle
P proudly rises the Grafenburg over the rooftops of Blankenheim, shaping the town's visual identity. Originally built as a hilltop castle around the year 1115, the fortress has been remodeled several times over the years, transforming from a medieval defense structure into today's baroque castle. Inside the castle is a modern youth hostel, offering guests the opportunity to stay within these historic walls.

Where the Ahr springs
Naturally, a visit to the Ahr spring is a must – as it is one of the city's most important landmarks. It springs forth in an impressive manner from the basement of an ancient half-timbered house in the center. From the spring, the river winds romantically through the Ahr Valley until it merges into the Rhine at Sinzig. The Ahr-Radweg (Ahr cycle path) and the Ahr-Steig hiking trail both start at the Ahr spring. The long-distance Eifelsteig trail (Stage 7) also passes here.
Afterward, one can continue the stroll through the charming old town alleys. For families with children, the adventure playground Weiherpark is a perfect stop for running around and playing. Other attractions include the Hirten- and Georgstor, the Eifel Museum, the Hülchrath chapel, and the Roman villa "Villa rustica."

Tip: If you happen to be in the area during carnival time, be sure not to miss the historic Ghost Parade of Blankenheim. In this annual procession on the evening of Carnival Saturday, spring spirits roam through the streets, driving away the winter demons.
