Think tank, centre for creative work, sociocultural forum, nucleus of modern life – in short, Utopiastadt in the north of Wuppertal is a place where people come together to make visions of the ideal city of the future a reality. An ideal location for this new kind of social exchange has been found within the protected halls of the former Mirke train station. 

A local creative district

Walk into Utopiastadt, where the focus lies on cultural work, self-organisation and civic engagement. Here you will find Wuppertal’s first electric cargo bike with a car-sharing station, voluntary bike rental and much more. Café Hutmacher acts as the entrance gate into the city of tomorrow. Surrounded by books and cosy seating areas made from old finds, you can simply spend a nice time here or find out about the current Utopiastadt initiatives. Right next door is the community workshop, where people work together on equipment and bicycles to get them back into shape again. The nearby coworking space is where creative ideas are worked on. And just a little further, in what was once waiting room 3, the stage is set for concerts and celebrations. 

What is happening at Utopiastadt?

The regular bicycle repair cafés, which are all about helping people to help themselves free of charge, are particularly popular. Concerts, festivals and readings also draw in the crowds, along with the ongoing food sharing and urban gardening projects.
