Fortress/Castle

The town of Horstmar has no fewer than eight stone witnesses to its times with its Burgmannshöfe. These listed treasures reflect the glorious medieval history of the town and its aristocratic culture. As parts of the former hilltop castle from the 11th century, they served to protect the large main complex and housed the castle men and their families. Today, some of the courtyards, most of which have been restored, can be visited on guided tours of the town and on Open Monument Day. They include the Münsterhof, the Sendenhof, the Valkenhof, the Strickhof and the Deipenhof, as well as the Merveldterhof, the Borchorsterhof and the Aschebergerhof.

Open Monument Day

On Open Monument Day, the Merveldter Hof is open to the public. Built in beautiful and rare bacon layer technique, it rests on the rampart above the moat. The gleaming, former three-winged blue of the Renaissance is privately inhabited, but enjoys great popularity on Open Monument Day.

History

The eight Burgmannshöfe are part of the former hilltop castle, which was built in the 11th century and of which only a moat, a section of rampart and the courtyards themselves remain today. These served to protect the castle and housed the castle men and their families. As lords of the town, they greatly extended their power and authority over the citizens and even the sovereigns and bishops. The courtyards were repeatedly modified in the past centuries.
