Church

Introduction

St. John's Church is often referred to as the "Little Church" and is located in the heart of the city.

St. John's Church is located in the heart of the town of Borken. Its history goes back to the year 1,200, when the Ludgerus Chapel still stood on the same site. As the street name "Kapuzinerstraße" already suggests, the Capuchins also had a part in the history of the church. They took over St. John's Church from the Knights of St. John in 1655 and later built the church in Baroque style. Today it belongs to the parish of St. Remigius.

History

The first references to the location of today's St. John's Church date back to the year 1200. At that time, the Ludgerus Chapel still stood on the site. It was part of a monastery complex that no longer exists today. About 60 years later, the site became the property of the Knights of St. John, who added a religious house to the church. During the Thirty Years' War, the church fell into disrepair and was sold to the Capuchins in 1655. They built the present St. John's Church in the Baroque style in 1696. About 80 years later, an independent chapel was added and at the end of the 19th century, the connection between the chapel and the nave followed.
