A free leisure park with a large stage: Mohns Park in the north of Gütersloh is a place that creates closeness and comfort: around 2000 people meet here on Sunday afternoons between June and September when the "Gütersloh Summer" program "rocks" the open-air stage with its concerts. The arena under the trees fascinates performers and audience alike. The kiosk and mini-golf course are open daily from the morning until the evening (except in Siberian cold and constant rain). Play areas and equipment, such as the volleyball court, are also available for games and sports.
In 1904, "Mohns Park" was initially created as a private recreation area by the publisher Johannes Mohn. Since 1937, it has been available to the public after being purchased by the city. The open-air stage in it has its own history: it was created after the Second World War on 50,000 cubic meters of rubble that was carted into the park from the destroyed city. Like many other Güterslohers of his generation, entrepreneur Rudolf Miele remembers helping to pile up the stones into a huge mountain as a boy. Perhaps this is one of the reasons why the people of Gütersloh maintain an almost familial relationship with "their" open-air stage.
In 1973, the almost 5.8-hectare park was expanded into a leisure facility: sports areas, mini golf, Kneipp pools, a water playground and other play facilities were added to the "green" offerings and have been continuously developed. A roller field hockey facility has been part of the program since 2008. The entire Mohns Park, however, thrives on the unagitated symbiosis of nature and design: a public park in the very best sense, without barriers, but with a lot of charisma.
