Slate mining in Nuttlar

The adventure mine in the Sauerland region

In mining history, the pit in Nuttlar is one of the most interesting relics of a mining era in the upper Ruhrtal valley that has long since passed, and which creates a deep impression thanks to its intact nature and the way it can be experienced. Gravel paths, concrete steps and electric lighting are nowhere to be found here. The guided tours take visitors past underground lakes, huge halls, over slate steps and through high passages. The mining techniques are explained on site, and the splitting or preparing of the slate is vividly demonstrated with original tools.
