On the Alter Markt (old market square) with the bell tower, with the old town hall (1710), “Zur Krim” and the Maximilianbrunnen fountain (1779) is where Arnsberg’s historic heart beats. The Madonna in the niche on the town hall building has survived many town fires and is witness to an eventful history.
At the side of the town hall there is the symbol of the Cologne rulers in Arnsberg.

Among other things, the old town hall is the seat of the cultural office of the town of Arnsberg, on the Alter Markt, between the bell tower and the Maximilianbrunnen fountain, the old town hall is easily overlooked and in photographs, it simply creates the framework for a picturesque old town motif - if it can be seen at all. A devastating fire in 1709 meant that a new town hall needed to be built. The Baroque building from the following year was rebuilt in 1840 - after another fire. It had already lost its singular significance in 1820, however, when the Second Town Hall, designed by Schinkel, was built. The town Madonna (Swabian, around 1500) in the town hall façade has miraculously survived a large number of fires in the town. On the north side of the town hall is the coat of arms of the Electorate of Cologne, symbol of Cologne rule in Arnsberg (1369-1802). The Alter Markt with the bell tower, together with the old town hall (1710), the bell tower and the Maximilianbrunnen fountain (1779) forms old Arnsberg’s “parlour”. The fountain column was presented by electoral prince Maximilian Friedrich (1784-1791) to his Westphalian residency town. The bell tower, the symbol of the town, can be seen from far away with its Baroque cap. The town chapel of St. Georg next door is a Gothic hall church from the 14th century.
