This castle was destroyed in 1762 during the Seven Year War. Models of the castle can be admired in the Sauerland Museum.
In 1100, the counts of Arnsberg built a fort on the Schlossberg hill. In the years and centuries that followed, Arnsberg castle had an eventful history, first under the counts and later under the electoral princes of Cologne. Under Electoral Prince Clemens August, it underwent its final impressive renovation as a hunting and residency palace.
Circular route around the castle grounds, the historic stone vaulted “Knappensaal” hall, the historic old town in a picturesque mountain setting, town walls and defence towers.
Various different concerts and other events are held at the site of the ruin, such as the medieval Spectaculum, the ruin festival and the lantern procession on St. Martin's Day.
