Market place Drolshagen

Marktplatz 1, 57489 Drolshagen
Historic town centre eFilling station

The market place was created after the fire in 1838. It received its present form in 1991. The fountain in the middle reminds us of key points in the city´s history linked with four sayings of the mystic Angelus Silesius (1624-1677).

The market place is lined by houses from the time of the reconstruction after the city fire. On the corner of Gerberstrasse, the large timbered house, in which the financial institution Sparkasse can be found today, differs from the other types of houses in the town center with its mansard roof.

Directly opposite is the former Hotel Schürholz, a listed timbered house. It was operated by its builder, Andreas Schürholz, as a hotel and was the “first place to be”.

After the city fire, only the rich citizens could settle on the market place and along the main street. New buildings further away were all the more modest when they were rebuilt after 1838.

The house at the corner of Annostraße / Kirchplatz, in which there is a restaurant, is one of the first stone buildings in Drolshagen. It was created at the beginning of the 20th century. Until then, there were only timbered buildings with a network of mud.

The beautiful stucco ornaments, rare for Drolshagen, are typical of this period. The house on the opposite site is where the old town hall used to be.
